How to redact a PDF

Mark sensitive areas directly on PDF pages and apply permanent redaction. Review pending marks, choose browser or server processing, and export a fresh PDF.

Updated . Tested step by step on this tool.

How to use Redact PDF

  1. Choose your PDF. The workspace opens in Redact mode.
  2. Choose Mark an area, then drag over the content to remove. Resize or move a pending mark in Properties when needed.
  3. Use the page thumbnails to review every mark. Undo, Redo and Remove let you correct marks before export.
  4. Choose Standard to run on your device, or Advanced server mode for a large job with a free account. Server processing refuses to export if its renderer is unavailable.
  5. Choose Apply redactions and export. This rebuilds every page as an image, with the blackouts burned into the marked areas. Original PDF resources are not carried into the exported copy.

Before you export

Permanent redaction exports a fresh image-only document. Every page loses selectable text, interactive fields and editable review annotations, including unmarked pages. This prevents shared source resources from retaining marked content. Review all visible pages and marks before sharing the copy. Continue into PDF OCR to restore search using only the visible, redacted pages.

The document stays in memory for this browser session. Export a copy before closing or reloading the tab. Pending marks remain editable before export. The exported redacted PDF does not contain the original objects, pending marks or undo history.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep working without uploading the PDF again?

Yes. The workspace keeps one document open across its modes for this browser session. Exported results also offer Continue with this PDF to hand the file to another tool.

Can I undo a change?

Undo and redo include added items, text changes, movement, resizing, removal, form values and page changes. Keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z work when a text input is not focused.

Will edits be here after I close the tab?

The browser session ends when you close or reload the tab. Export your redacted copy first. Permanent redaction removes original objects and project metadata from that copy; its blackouts cannot be undone by reopening it.
