Handyman invoice template

What a handyman invoice needs, a filled-in example for a small repair visit, and how to bill hours plus the small materials that come with them.

Updated by the ToolsToHelp.Me team

Handyman jobs are usually short, mix several small tasks in one visit, and get paid on the spot. An invoice for this kind of work does not need to be elaborate, but it should show the hours, the minimum charge if one applies, and the small materials that added to the total.

What to include on a handyman invoice

  • Your name or business name and contact details. A phone number is often more useful to customers than an address for this kind of work.
  • The customer's name and job address.
  • A unique invoice number. Even simple sequential numbers help if a customer calls back about a past job.
  • Hours worked and your hourly rate, including any minimum charge that applied.
  • Small materials, grouped sensibly so the invoice is not cluttered with every fastener.
  • Each task on its own line, if the visit covered more than one repair.

How to word your line items

A single line reading "Handyman work, $271" is fine for a very small job, but showing hours and materials separately builds trust for anything past a quick fix.

  • Time: "Handyman service, hourly (2-hour minimum)" with the hours and rate shown.
  • Materials: group related small items, such as "Drywall patch materials", rather than listing each screw or fastener.
  • Parts: name specific hardware, such as "Door lockset (parts)", with the quantity and unit price so the math is easy to check.

Payment terms for handyman work

  • Due on completion for nearly all jobs, since the work is finished in a single visit.
  • A stated minimum charge, such as 1 or 2 hours, disclosed to the customer before the visit, not just on the invoice.
  • A materials deposit for jobs that need you to buy an unusual or costly part ahead of time.

Invoice payment terms explained covers how to word your terms clearly.

Frequently asked questions

How should a handyman bill for a short visit?

Most handyman work is billed hourly, often with a minimum, such as a 1 or 2 hour minimum charge, plus the cost of any small parts or materials used on the visit.

Do I need to itemize every small part I use?

You do not need a line for every screw, but grouping small materials into one line, such as "drywall patch materials", keeps the invoice honest without making it cluttered.

What if a job takes longer than the customer expected?

Show the actual hours worked on the invoice. If you quoted a rough estimate beforehand, a quick text or call when the job runs long avoids a surprised customer at payment time.

Should I charge for multiple small tasks in one visit?

Yes, list each task on its own line even if they were done in the same visit, such as a lockset install and a drywall patch, so the customer can see what filled the time.

When is payment usually due for handyman work?

Almost always due on completion, since the job is finished before you leave the property.
