What it means
The time limit for a creditor or debt collector to sue you over a debt. It varies by state and debt type, usually 3 to 6 years. After it expires, the debt is "time-barred" and the collector cannot win a lawsuit against you. Note: this is separate from the 7-year credit reporting period.
