What it means
Your right under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) to make a debt collector prove a debt is valid and that it has the legal right to collect it. Ask in writing within 30 days of receiving the collector's validation notice for the strongest protection: the collector must pause collection until it mails you proof. You can still ask after 30 days, but without the pause.
