Fraud Alert
What it means
A notice on your credit file that tells lenders to take extra steps to verify your identity before opening new credit in your name. An initial fraud alert lasts 1 year; you place one when you suspect fraud. An extended fraud alert lasts 7 years and requires an identity theft report.
